Frequently Asked Questions about DX Geothermal Systems
Can I retrofit my existing home?
Over 80% of the existing homes Smart Energy consults on can be converted to Geothermal.
Can I use my existing equipment and Ductwork?
The answer often depends on how new or old the existing system is. Most air handlers are sized for the cooling load, not the heating load. So it may be more practical to put in a heating system that is the same size as the cooling system, especially if the equipment is relatively new. We call these types of systems Hybrid Geothermal Systems.
For example: In the northeast, a 5-ton cooling load for a home would have a 10-ton heating load. We would put in a 5 ton Geothermal system and rely on the existing heating system to make up the additional 5 tons. The system would provide 100% of the cooling in summer using 50% less electric than the old system. In winter, there would be approximately 20 to 30 days that the system would need to rely on the old heating system for supplemental heat. The overall savings on Hybrids depends on the size of the cooling load compared to the heat load.
How much Maintenance is there on these Geothermal systems?
As with most Geothermal systems, you need to check the refrigerant after your first major season change. Besides that, you need to change the filters in the air handlers just like a traditional system.
How many DX Geothermal systems have Smart Energy Installed?
Hundreds. We are looking forward to the day when we can answer this question with "Thousands!"
How long do DX Geothermal systems last?
They can and often last for 15 to 20 years. They can last significantly longer but the technology for DX has only been out for 21 years.
What kind of Copper do you use?
Refrigeration-grade copper is the only type of copper used in DX systems. All lines are brazed, not soldered.
Is it safe to bury Copper in the ground?
In its raw state, copper comes from the ground. We install a sacrificial anode for each system. These anodes have an electric AC/DC current that runs through the copper, protecting the lines from any adverse ground conditions. (We have systems that are sitting in the ocean.)
How long is the payback?
If we cannot see a 7 year or less payback prior to the tax credit component, we will not recommend installing Geothermal.
What is the current tax credit?
There is a 30% Geothermal Federal Tax Credit on the entire system installed. Previously, there was a 2,000 cap, which has been eliminated by the new administration.
How many holes do you have to drill?
Depending on how deep we can drill on your property, three 50-foot holes per ton or one 100-foot hole per ton. These bore holes are only 3-1/2 inches in diameter and are drilled on a 20- to 30-degree diagonal.
How much room do you need to drill?
Most homes require an eight-foot diameter circle.
How long does it take to do the exterior part of the job?
Small jobs can be completed in less than one week. Most larger jobs can be completed in less than two weeks.
How big is the drilling equipment?
Our drill rig weighs 14 tons and is 24 feet long and 8.5 feet wide.
Can you drill in sand or water?
Our specially-designed drill rig can drill in any conditions.
